QR codes in porno industry

25.10.2014

You have likely encountered a QR (or Quick Response) code, though you may not have known its name or why it has begun to present itself most everywhere. Now popular, QR codes are being used on magazines advertisements, buses, business cards, and almost any other object about which users might wish to gain a marketers information. To make matters more significant, most smartphones now come with a built-in 2D barcode scanner to read QRs or one can be freely downloaded to practically all camera-phones; so many more people than ever before are now capable of employing them.
Taking the popularity of this new concept into consideration- and the dwindling online porn industry, which has been suffering from decreased viewership, sales and membership- QR codes may just be the next step for the high-tech, for-profit sex biz. During the month of June 2011, 14 million mobile users scanned a QR code or a barcode. As 53% of these 14 million users were men between the ages of 18 and 34, could there be a faster way to reach your ideal porn consumer? In what seems to have taken a nano-second, all porn-related DVDs now routinely feature QR’s alongside the title to provide potential buyers access to “more detailed online information,” and Victoria’s Secret routinely features ads encouraging the viewer to utilize the QR codes conveniently placed on the anatomy of their scantily clad models to see “more of what’s underneath.”

So in the face of these changes and the fact that more and more everyday folks seeking online “fame” and “fortune” by putting it all out there for everyone to see for free … or for a small fee, are taking up the online marketplace- it would behoove the sex biz to use QR codes to capture desperately needed consumer dollars.

In short, seeing that over the past decade pornographers have been watching their formerly high profit margins dip substantially as a result of newer technologies, endless free porn, increasingly laisse-faire sexual attitudes among the under-30 set and instantaneous GPS located access to sexual partners, the declining porn pay-for porn and others- why not compete by jumping on the QR code band-wagon? For those that are already pursing the technology- seem to be benefiting from it. With new sites like QRgirls.com just launching- we can begin to see a turn in the tide. And if proven successful, rest assured there will be more to come.
